Inbetween Days

Flowers and butterflies still grace the garden. There is grass to be cut and tomatoes are ripening on the vines. Yet long, light summer evenings dwindle as days shorten.

Last call for summer dresses, sandals and cool cotton tops! Soak up every ray of sunshine while the warmth lasts. Time for one final barbecue?

Bramble-scratched arms, berry stained tongue. Mist in the valley on dew-soaked mornings. Swallows discuss departing for warmer climes. Apples, blackberries, elderberries, quince. Leaves redden yet cling on - for now.
In the kitchen: pickles and jellies, jams and relishes, chutneys and syrups and fruit pies. The harvest is being gathered and stored for the cold months ahead.
Neither still summer nor yet totally autumn. We balance on the cusp.

  1. We are just entering spring, beautiful blue skies, crisp cold mornings. Birds singing and warm happy people.

  3. summer is definitely taking her last bow here, and ushering in autumn in her place. the seasons are turning, and the nights drawing in again. This is my favourite time of year, and I welcome the autumns return....

  4. I love the time of year when the season are beginning to turn. I love the fresh promise of early spring and the drawing in of autumn. Although spring is my favourite, autumn reminds me to dig in and curl up to rest after a hectic summer. Hope the weather is nice wherever you all are.

  5. September is one of the most glorious
months in San Francisco, warm and golden. Yesterday at the farmer's market I got heirloom tomatoes, figs, and of course, oysters. I'll cut some basil from the plants on my deck and tonight we will feast.

  6. What a beautiful prose poem! I love what we call in the U.S. the "shoulder" seasons. Hard to understand how to dress or even what mood to put on the morning.

Hang on to that berry stained tongue as long as possible!

  7. Our Utah mountains are turning red and gold, and the air is finally cool enough to enjoy. It's time to go hiking and have barbecues as often as possible before the first snow...
Too soon, it will be time to light all the candles and watch the storms come in. I've got to clean out the closet so I can find my warm winter blanket.
